2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure notified employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the necessity for a clearer direction.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire message from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to endure.”
Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our players.
The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
His leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the recent years producing and managing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in greeting Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep observing the evolution of the game in the time to follow.
David
Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Project Ethos was revealed in October 2024 together with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."
The game lacks an official release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as creation continues.
