The World is Invited to Become the Additional Haim Sisters Sister.

"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The sender also longs to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile supporters have openly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos repeatedly feature them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to start a band."

Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent toughness called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global audience.

Yet the band will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
