WHO Sounds Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections

Fewer than a tenth of people who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural advice on the medications.

Given more than one billion people worldwide now obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

Per projections, over two billion could be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The new guidance affirms that obesity is a chronic disease that can be managed with holistic and ongoing support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to widespread availability to the treatments that can help people shift considerable body mass, says the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even in the current most optimistic outlook, the production of these medications would only suffice for around 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, according to the WHO.

The guideline calls on countries and companies to increase access, via approaches such as licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the primary component of a leading brand – is set to lapse in multiple countries in 2026.

GLP-1 drugs mimick a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and boost feelings of fullness so users eat less.

People typically begin shedding pounds in the initial weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Studies indicates people may regain a significant portion after a year of halting the treatment, when their typical appetite return.

Being carrying excess weight raises your likelihood for developing health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Obesity impacts people in all nations and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
